Luau Party Planning

Invitations
It starts with invitations. Here's your first chance to get creative and put people in the mood. This is the place to address what people should wear and what to expect at the party. Formal or casual? Hawaiian skirts and coconut bikinis provided?

Hawaiian postcards sent in the mail is a really nice touch.

Hawaiian pictures and fonts abound. Make your invitations memorable.

Always have your guests RSVP.

Decorations

A tropical ambiance can best be created with rich vibrant bright colors.

Some great ideas for decorations include:
» Palm fronds and palm trees
» Nylon fish nets and seashells
» Scatter Fresh Loose Orchids to Decorate Tables
» Tiki statues and tiki torches
» Bamboo matting on the floor
» Bowls filled with river rock and tealights
» Balloon bouquets
» Coconut Scented Candles as Table Centerpieces

Attire
Attire is definitely something you want to address before the party starts Hawaiian prints and grass skirts or sun dresses are great casual. Suits and formal dresses for those more elegant gatherings. Let your guests know if aloha/beach wear is optional or mandatory.

Leis and puka shell necklaces are great accessories and can be handed out at the door when greeting guests.

Dining and Drinks
The centerpiece of atraditional hawaiian luau is kalua pig. Depending on how authentic you want to be you can roast your pig in an underground pit, or roast one on a spit. If that's too ambitious, you can roast one in your oven (kalua pig recipe). There are places that will ship you fully prepared pigs ready for roasting.

Hawaii is the center of many cultures, polynesian, asian, and mainland in in addition to local island cuisine. Serve a buffet style lunch or dinner that incorporates a mix of new and old favorites, comfort food and traditional luau staples.

Games and Entertainment
» Play Hawaiian Music CD/Tape
» Hire flame throwers
» Teach guests how to dance Hawaiian style
» Hula hoop contest
» Hire Hawaiian dancers or Hawaiian bands
